초록

This study investigates the co-occurrence phenomenon of degree adverbs in MandarinChinese conversation, analyzing their morphological features quantitatively and theirdiscourse-pragmatic functions qualitatively. The quantitative analysis reveals that fewertypes of adverbials are used in series in natural conversation compared to writtenlanguage. Degree adverbs in conversation are often combined with other degree adverbsin diverse ways. Typically, one-syllable adverbs pair with one-syllable adverbs,absolute adverbs with absolute adverbs, and high-grade adverbs with high-gradeadverbs. Adverbs of the same grade are preferred, and those differing by more than onegrade are rarely combined. The qualitative analysis shows that consecutive use ofdegree adverbs serves multiple functions. First, the consecutive use of degree adverbshas an intensification function. Second, they have a weakening function. Third, the useof degree adverbs performs a neutralizing function.
