The Mediating Effect of Resilience on the Relationship Between Self-Compassion and Mental Toughness in Taekwondo Athletes

초록

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of resilience in the relationship between self-compassion and mental toughness among Taekwondo athletes Method A total of 513 high school and university Taekwondo athletes registered with the Korea Taekwondo Association participated in this study. Data were collected using validated scales measuring self-compassion, resilience, and mental toughness. The collected data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Results The results indicated that self-compassion had a significant positive effect on resilience, and resilience had a significant positive effect on mental toughness. Furthermore, resilience fully mediated the relationship between self-compassion and mental toughness. These findings suggest that mental toughness in Taekwondo athletes is not directly influenced by self-compassion, but is developed through a psychological adaptation process involving resilience. Conclusion Therefore, it is necessary to design psychological training programs that integrate both self-compassion and resilience in order to effectively enhance mental toughness in Taekwondo athletes.
