The need for V2V communications in future vehicles will escalate because of driver demands for content, especially as vehicles are becoming more autonomous, thus allowing drivers to download files and streams from the Internet. Since LTE and DSRC spectrum is scarce, vehicles will need to tap the unlicensed ISM spectrum to establish V2V channels in order to communicate and download. However, the WiFi spectrum is overcrowded with residential users requiring channel-agile, cognitive radios to mitigate interference. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of CoVanet, a Cognitive Vanet that features cognitive radios specifilly designed for the urban scenario. The CoVanet features are applied to CoRoute, an anypath routing protocol that trades off robustness (to primary interference) with path length and exploits multiple path diversity. Cognitive Multicast, or CoCast, is then introduced for popular applications downloading. CoCast offers innovative features such as parallel data block transmissions in OFDM subchannels and network coding across parallel channels. CoRoute and CoCast QualNet simulation results indicate that they outperform existing wireless routing schemes in interference prone urban environments. © 2016 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
