창업중심대학 지원기업의 소재지와 기업성과에 관한 실증분석: 수도권·비수도권 비교를 중심으로

Purpose – This study empirically examines the relationship between corporate location and firm performance among startups supported by the Startup-centric University program of the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development. Design/Methodology/Approach – A raw dataset of 1,236 firms was constructed by matching the list of supported startups with corporate data from the Hubble Database. Using a filtered sample with available baseline information, the study compared the differences in 2024 sales and employment between firms in the Seoul metropolitan area and those in non-metropolitan areas. The analysis utilized descriptive statistics, mean difference tests, multiple regression analysis, and an assessment of growth rates from 2021 to 2024. Findings – While some descriptive statistics indicated a relatively higher average performance for metropolitan firms, these differences were not consistently significant in mean difference tests and multivariate analyses. Notably, after controlling for industry, firm age, corporate characteristics, and initial size, the effect of being located in the metropolitan area weakened or became statistically insignificant. This suggests that performance disparities among the supported startups cannot be simply attributed to the geographic location itself. Research Implications – These results imply that the performance of non-metropolitan firms should be understood in terms of access to growth resources and local ecosystem connectivity, rather than a general inherent regional disadvantage.
