In stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC), peritoneal metastasis is associated with poor prognosis. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is an effective treatment option to obtain survival benefits in patients with peritoneal metastatic CRC. For several decades, numerous studies on CRS and HIPEC for peritoneal metastatic diseases have been conducted and are still in progress. The proper patient selection and preoperative assessment are crucial to achieve successful postoperative outcomes. Cytoreduction completeness and surgical techniques are required to improve oncologic outcomes after CRS plus HIPEC. The role of HIPEC for therapeutic and prophylactic aims are evaluated in recent clinical trials. In this article, we review the basic principles of CRS with HIPEC and recent clinical trials for the treatment of CRS plus HIPEC in CRC patients with PC.
