This study aimed to identify the tasks performed by dental hygienists and to analyze their importance and frequency to provide an empirical basis for developing updated, competency-based national examination items. A systematic literature review was conducted to categorize dental hygienists’ tasks, and an online survey was administered to newly employed dental hygienists with less than three years of clinical experience. The survey assessed the frequency of task performance and its perceived importance. Using stratified sampling, responses were collected from dental hygienists working in 220 dental institutions nationwide. Tasks were classified into six major domains, 20 subdomains, and 142 individual task items. In the Hospital and Clinic Management domain, “Respond to patient preparation and seating” ranked highest in both frequency and importance. In the Safety and Infection Control domain, “Equipment management (surface disinfection/sterilization)” showed the highest priority. For the Risk Factor Assessment domain, “Verify and record current medications” scored highest in both measures. Within the Dental Hygiene Professionalism domain, “Removal of tooth surface deposits” ranked highest in importance. In the Clinical Support domain, “Prepare instruments for each treatment” was rated highest in frequency, while “Preparation for oral surgery” ranked highest in importance. In the Health Promotion and Maintenance domain, “Precautions education before and after surgery” was prioritized for both measures. This study systematically identified core contemporary tasks of dental hygienists and highlighted priority areas based on importance and performance frequency. These findings provide essential foundational evidence for developing competency-based national licensing examination items that reflect current dental hygiene practice.
