Validity Examination of the Exercise Satisfaction Scale in Adolescent Taekwondo Athletes: An Item Response Theory Approach

초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the exercise satisfaction scale for adolescent Taekwondo athletes using an item response theory approach. The participants were 244 athletes who provided complete responses to all nine items of the scale, which consisted of three factors: task performance satisfaction, social interaction, and coach leadership. Data were analyzed using R 4.4.2 through descriptive statistics, parallel analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and graded response model analysis. The results showed that although the scale demonstrated a strong general factor, the three-factor structure fit the data better than the one-factor structure. In addition, all three subfactors generally showed acceptable unidimensionality, with coach leadership displaying the highest explained variance and item discrimination. In contrast, the social interaction factor showed relatively lower fit for some items. These findings suggest that the exercise satisfaction scale should be interpreted in terms of its subdimensions rather than a single total score and provide psychometric evidence for a more refined assessment of exercise satisfaction in adolescent Taekwondo athletes.
