초록
While tourism plays a pivotal role in enhancing subjective well-being and national economies, South Korea has grappled with a structural imbalance as outbound international travel consistently outpaces domestic demand. This disparity has resulted in a chronic tourism deficit. Despite governmental initiatives to stimulate domestic tourism, empirical research examining the longitudinal dynamics between domestic and international travel demands remains scarce. Leveraging a four-year longitudinal panel dataset (2012–2015) from the Korea National Tourism Survey, this study employs Latent Growth Curve Modeling (LGCM) to analyze the travel frequency trajectories of 1,626 active Korean tourists. The findings demonstrate that domestic and international travel trajectories evolve independently, contesting conventional perspectives that categorize them as strictly substitutes or complements. Furthermore, the study identifies divergent effects of age on travel trajectories and a robust, persistent positive influence of household income exclusively on international travel. These results offer significant theoretical contributions by elucidating tourists' independent mental accounting and provide policymakers with evidence-based insights to position domestic tourism as a distinct experiential good rather than a mere substitute for international travel.
