The Impact of Virtual Sports Experience on University Students’ Perceptions of Physical Education : A Qualitative Study Using HADO

초록

This study qualitatively explores how experiencing the virtual sport HADO affects university students' perceptions of physical education. Thirty students enrolled in the “Sports and Computer” course at a university in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, participated by submitting experiential reports and engaging in focus group interviews (FGI). Data were analyzed using both content and thematic analysis methods. The results revealed that participants shifted their perception of virtual sports from simple games to immersive and physically demanding activities, thereby expanding their understanding of the concept of sports. They also recognized the educational value of HADO, particularly in enhancing engagement and motivation in PE classes, while simultaneously expressing concerns regarding technological limitations and equipment infrastructure. Importantly, participants emphasized that virtual sports should complement, rather than replace, traditional physical education. This study provides empirical insights into the potential of virtual sports in digital-era physical education and offers foundational data for future curriculum development and educational policy planning.
