Theme of the mind and Confucianism and Buddhism in Kim Man-jung's novels

초록

This paper examines the ideological background of Kim Man-jung's novels and the ways in which themes of the mind common to Confucianism and Buddhism are depicted in his novels. It examines the writer's life and critical writings on his activities and thoughts related to the theory of the mind, and uses these as a clue to discuss the themes of the mind dealt with in his works. Kim Man-jung was involved in the proofreading of Simgyeongseokui, which was supervised by Song Si-yeol. The Confucian theory of the mind is concentrated in this book, so it is thought that it had a significant influence on the author's understanding of the mind. In addition, during his exile in Seoncheon, he borrowed and read the Neungeomgyeong from a monk. This sutra, which contains the essence of Buddhist theory of the mind, is also likely to have influenced the author. In the commentary of Seopomanpil, he repeatedly stated that Confucianism's theory of the mind originated from Buddhism. He recognized the concepts of the theory in the context of the influence of Confucianism and Buddhism, and highly valued the empirical and subjective method of recognizing the mind. He based it on Zhu Xi's teachings, but also affirmed the theory ofin Yangmingism. He discussed the sexual desires of men and women using examples from Buddhism, Yangmingism, and novels. Kim Man-jung's two novels deal with the theme of the mind. <Guunmong> shows the manifestation and fulfillment of desires centered on the direction of the mind. It depicts the enjoyment of wealth and honor through the senses and ends with a return to the pure origin. <Sassinamjeonggi> delicately depicts the problems of the mind that go back and forth between good and evil, centering on three characters. Confucianism's theory of human nature is embodied in characters and events, and the image of evil is presented on the background of Buddhist theory of mind. As mentioned above, the two novels depict the theme of the mind that is a fusion of Confucianism and Buddhism. This aspect will be a major reference for understanding the depth of the theme and the source of sympathy in the two works.
