초록

This study analyzes the impact of patent royalty base on the incentives for innovation. Focusing specifically on the effects of two methods-ad valorem royalties and per-unit fixed rate royalties-this paper examines how royalty structures affect innovation investments in a setting where a patent holder makes an initial innovation investment and a licensee subsequently makes a follow-on innovation investment based on it. The analysis reveals that while the ad valorem royalty is superior in terms of the final product’s price and the patent holder’s initial investment, it can hinder the follow-on innovation investment. Under a linear demand and a specific cost assumptions, it is revealed that the ad valorem royalty is superior in terms of overall effect of investments on demand expansions and the price of final product.
