초록

Focusing on John Edgar Wideman’s Sent for You Yesterday, this study explores how blues music functions as a cultural mechanism of resistance within the African American community. It applies a three-stage analytical framework derived frombell hooks’s discourse on the marginality. First, the study conceptualizes Homewood, a spacemarked by racial oppression, as a site of epistemic advantage that exposes the fallacies of the dominant hegemony. Second, it explores howthe blues performances of Albert and Brother expose cracks in the dominant discourse and expand them into an ‘alternative space.’ Third, it illustrates how Doot’s embodiment of the ancestral blues spirit transcends personal awakening, offering a practical stepping stone for Homewood to evolve into a sustainable community of resistance. Ultimately, this paper argues thatWideman’s reclamation of the blues tradition reflects a continuumof counter-discourse that has safeguarded Black agency fromslavery to contemporary hip-hop.
