Chorea Aggravated by Dehydration in a Patient With Diabetic Striatopathy: A Case Report

Diabetic striatopathy is a hyperkinetic movement disorder featuring hemichorea/ hemiballism, most commonly seen in patients with non-ketotic hyperglycemia. Previous research has demonstrated that glycemic control and additional anti-chorea medication are effective treatments for diabetic striatopathy. This case report presents the case of a 77-yearold woman who presented with acute choreiform movements. Upon diagnosis of diabetic striatopathy, glycemic control and anti-chorea medications were initiated, resulting in initial symptom improvement. However, the symptoms subsequently worsened due to dehydration, which improved after sufficient hydration. We report that dehydration serves as an additional factor exacerbating diabetic striatopathy.
