Usability and Safety of Micromobility: Insights from Virtual and Real-World Experimental Studies

The proliferation of micromobility systems, such as e-scooters, presents new opportunities in urbantransportation, helping to reduce congestion and support environmental goals. However, ensuring road user safetyremains a significant challenge. While previous studies have used multimodal sensing data from virtual and realworldexperiments to examine micromobility safety, a comprehensive review is lacking. This paper synthesizes currentresearch on micromobility safety, focusing on user behavior, infrastructure design, and technological innovations—a literature search across databases identified 28 relevant sources from 59 peer-reviewed articles. The review highlightsthe importance of sensing technologies in capturing user behavior and minimizing risks. Both virtual simulations andreal-world experiments offer valuable insights into how micromobility devices operate in differ-ent environments. However, research gaps persist, including the absence of standardized experimental frameworks, limited studies ondiverse demographic preferences, and insufficient integration of emerging technologies, such as AI and augmented reality,into micromobility safety strategies. This review calls for a comprehensive, integrated approach to micromobility safetyinvolving col-laboration among policymakers, urban planners, technologists, and researchers. Leveraging technologicaladvancements and targeted interventions can address existing challenges, leading to safer and more resilient urbantransportation systems. The find-ings provide actionable recommendations for improving public health and safety byenhancing the usability and safety of micro-mobility. Ultimately, this paper emphasizes the need for further research toclose these gaps, ensuring safer and more accessible urban transportation networks through the efficient and effectiveadoption of micromobility solutions.
