Development and evaluation of a modified trifunctional epoxy matrix for enhanced corrosion resistance: combined experimental and theoretical studies

This study introduces a novel trifunctional epoxy resin, focusing on the synthesis and structural characterization of triglycidyl ether of tetrabromobisphenol A phosphoric ester (TGETBBAPE), an innovative epoxy compound specifically engineered to mitigate the corrosion of mild steel (MS) in an acidic environment (1 M HCl) at 298 K. The corrosion inhibitory performance of TGETBBAPE was comprehensively assessed through various electrochemical methods, including potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). TGETBBAPE demonstrated good corrosion inhibition in hydrochloric acid, with efficiencies of 95.6%, 93.6%, and 95.6% at inhibitor concentrations of 10-3 M, as assessed by PDP, EIS, and EFM, respectively. Furthermore, the results of the conducted studies on polarization indicate that the examined matrix functions as a mixed-type inhibitor. As demonstrated by isothermal adsorption studies, the inhibitor in question has been shown to adhere to the Langmuir adsorption model. The inhibitor molecules form a chemical connection with the electrode surface (Delta Gads = -38.58 kJ/mol). Additionally, surface analysis methods and theoretical simulations (DFT, MD, and MC) were employed to validate and elucidate the experimental results.
