The advancement of sustainable and green energy sources plays a crucial role in fighting global warming. Hydrogen is well-accepted as a clean energy carrier, which could substantially cut down on greenhouse emissions. Water electrolysis is considered the most promising approach for hydrogen production, and a catalyst usually accompanies it. Therefore, the development of exceptional, affordable, and stable electrode materials is significant in dealing with energy and environmental issues. Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) is viewed as a potential alternative for HER due to low electrical resistivity and high thermal and chemical durability. This review presents the latest works on MoO2-based heterostructural materials for HER. Notably, the MoO2 structure, properties, and synthetic strategies are introduced. Also, various hetero-nanostructures, including MoO2/-metal, -metal oxides, -metal phosphides, -metal carbides, -metal sulfides, and -metal nitrides for HER, are discussed for HER. Furthermore, recent works based on MoO2 for natural seawater splitting are presented, which would provide their potential in industrial applications. Finally, critical problems and feasible solutions for the fabrication of MoO2-related heterogeneous catalysts for hydrogen production were explored.
