초록

Recent advances in science and technology have expanded our ability to integrate the nanomaterials and functional moieties required for advanced applications. Functionalization of nanomaterials is the topic of research which emerged as an alternative pathway to overcome some of the existing issues in nanotechnology. By optimizing the surface properties of nanomaterials, the physicochemical and biological properties of nanomaterials can be significantly improved. This chapter examines the fundamentals of the surface functionalization strategies employed in nanomaterials synthesis such as bio-functionalization, chemical functionalization, and biosynthesis. In addition, the underlying biomedical research such as therapy, targeted drug delivery, biosensors, and other important pharmaceutical applications reported recently are discussed. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
