In this study, we propose a model to quantitatively assess the functionality loss of network structures in a railway system due to seismic events, with the goal of evaluating the potential socioeconomic impacts on railway networks. The proposed model was applied to a domestic railway comprehensive test track, and the functionality loss was assessed under extreme earthquake scenarios. To develop the functionality loss evaluation model for the railway netwoiic structures, existing seismic fragility curves of each component were analyzed, and statistical data on restoration time were utilized to derive restoration curves. By combining the seismic fragility and restoration curves, a step-by- step procedure was established to derive functionality and functionality loss curves. When the model was applied to a comprehensive railway test track, it was found that embankment sections built on soft soil experienced approximately 20% functionality loss; the average flmctionality loss rate for the entire railway netwoiic was assessed at approximately 9%. Based on this study, it is expected that future research aimed at improving the fragility curve and analyzing the spatial correlation of railway networks could lead to the development of more advanced models for quantitatively evaluating the socioeconomic impacts on railway networks. © 2025 The Korean Society for Railway.
