Modernization Theory and South Korean Studies of Modern Chinese History in the 1960s

초록

The article aims to explain the relationship between South Korean studies of modern Chinese history and the Modernization theory in the 1960s. The analysis results are as follows. First, Modernization theory was introduced to Korean academia in the late 1950s and widely accepted as a logic and tool for analyzing and understanding history. Historians, especially those who study Chinese history, were no exception. Second, until the mid-1960s, the academia had an influx of Modernization theory, which influenced the interpretation and composition of modern Chinese history. The contemporary perspective on the interpretation of modern Chinese history based on Modernization theory was ‘Impact-Response.’ Third, historians began reinterpretation of Modernization theory in the mid-1960s. Works of Min Tu-ki are notable examples of adopting the reinterpretation of Modernization theory into the research of modern Chinese history.
