Insights into the state-of-the-art advancements in morphology and electronic structure engineering on cobalt diselenide-based nanomaterials for hydrogen evolution reaction

The advancement of exceptional performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is critical for mitigating environmental degradation caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Cobalt diselenide (CoSe2), as a member of the transition metal dichalcogenides group, has gained considerable attention in water electrolysis due to its advantages, such as metal-like resistance, good intrinsic catalytic activity, and high durability. In this review, the various strategies for expediting the HER performance of CoSe2 are comprehensively reviewed, focusing on two aspects: tuning morphological structures and electronic structures, such as morphology control, heterojunction construction, doping engineering, intrinsic defect engineering, phase control, and hybrid structures with carbon materials. These strategies could improve HER performance of CoSe2 by increasing the number of active sites, regulating electronic structures, and reducing the energy barrier of water electrolysis. Also, a comparison of strategies is presented to identify advantages and disadvantages for the selection of a suitable approach in HER. Furthermore, critical challenges demanding immediate and sustained solutions are produced. This study aims to illustrate the outstanding properties and provide strategies for preparing high-efficiency CoSe2-based HER electrocatalysts.
