Improved electrochemical performance of MgCr2O4/rGO nanohybrid for supercapacitor applications

The utilization of spinel oxide nanoparticles as pseudocapacitor electrodes provides a great way to address current energy problems. This work used a hydrothermal method that is environmentally benign to mix MgCr2O4 with rGO. The MgCr2O4/rGO nanohybrid demonstrated specific capacitance (Cs) of 1083.51 F/g and power density (Pd) of 285 W/kg at 1 A/g, and also shows high Cs retention of 96.08 % after 4000th charging/discharging cycles. According to the Nyquist plot, MgCr2O4/rGO solution resistance (Rs) was 1.3 Omega, which was significantly less than MgCr2O4 (1.5 Omega). The impedance tests indicated an increased rate of the Faradaic redox reaction following the integration of rGO, which improved the MgCr2O4/rGO inherent conductivity. The symmetric behavior of the generated electrode assessed using 2-electrode configuration with Cs (358.91 F/g) and Pd of 880 Wh/kg. Therefore, MgCr2O4/rGO nanohybrid is an ideal solution for utilized as an electrode sample in supercapacitors (SCs).
