This study evaluates the potential of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as sustainable alternatives to ionic liquids (ILs) for modifying textiles. It explores the physicochemical properties of DESs, emphasizing their low toxicity, eco-friendliness, and versatility in processing textile materials for diverse applications. This review initiates DESs for modifying natural and synthetic fibers/fabrics, highlighting their potential to revolutionize sustainable textile manufacturing. Moreover, it emphasizes the recent advancements in DES research for textile applications, identifying the important scientific issues and pointing out interesting research directions that could further enhance our understanding of these solvents and their applications. Although DES properties and general applications have been extensively reviewed, no previous work has specifically addressed their potential for textile modification. This review is anticipated to inspire intensified research efforts and hasten industrial adoption of DESs as sustainable solvents for textile applications. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
