The escalating environmental concerns have intensified the quest for sustainable and eco-friendly technologies. The green synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures offers a sustainable alternative to traditional methods by employing environmentally benign precursors. This approach emphasizes energy-efficient processes, aligning with the principles of green chemistry and reducing ecological impact. This review delves into recent innovations in the green synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures, emphasizing their applications in environmental photocatalysis, and examines diverse green synthesis strategies that utilize plant extracts, bio-wastes, and microorganisms as natural reducing and capping agents. Such eco-friendly approaches not only minimize environmental risks but also enhance the functional properties of the resulting nanomaterials. The review further discusses the structural and functional characteristics of these nanostructures, which contribute to their enhanced photocatalytic efficiency in degrading organic pollutants, purifying air, and splitting water under visible light irradiation. By analyzing current trends and advancements, this article provides insights into the challenges and future prospects of integrating green-synthesized metal oxide nanostructures in environmental remediation technologies.
