Recent advancements in 2D Ti3C2 MXene based composites for absorption dominated flexible electromagnetic interference shielding devices: A review

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) pollution creates serious challenges to the operation of high-precision electronic devices and also adversely effects human health. To mitigate these issues, the development of potential EMI shielding devices is necessary. Owing to high electrical conductivity, layered structure, and abundant surface termination groups, Ti3C2 MXenes effectively attenuate (absorb) incident electromagnetic (EM) waves as evidenced by the reliable observations such as ohmic loss, multiple internal reflections, and polarization loss. Thus, the importance of pure and altered Ti3C2 MXene is evaluated for oxidative-resistant EMI shielding performance. Further, lightweight characteristics (paper and aerogels) explored to explain the flexible EMI shielding performance. Later, polymers, carbon-based, and metal oxides integration highlighted for improvement in electrical properties during EMI shielding. The above composite networks successfully advanced multiple internal reflections between conductive Ti3C2 MXene layers for absorption dominant EMI shielding. Moreover, EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) is strongly influenced by the MXene loading content, electrical conductivity, and shielding thickness. As a result, advancement in the Ti3C2/polyethyleneimine composite growth on cotton fabric and Ti3C2-decoration on textile completely suppressed EM wave energy from 1.29 mu T and 4989 mu W cm-2, respectively. On the other hand, Ti3C2 MXene-based composites in the form of ink-grids maintained stable and flexible EMI shielding performance. Overall, versatility in Ti3C2 MXene-based composites offers absorption-dominated EMI shielding performance. Finally, conclusions and future directions are discussed to further strengthen the role of 2D Ti3C2 MXenes in the next-generation EMI shielding technologies.
