ZIF-67/Bi2S3/g-C3N4 nanocomposite: Design, characterization, and multifunctional electrochemical applications in energy storage and production

The development of multifunctional electrode materials has become a key challenge for high-performance energy storage and conversion systems. In this work, a ternary ZIF-67/Bi2S3/g-C3N4 nanocomposite was synthesized using the hydrothermal approach, which integrates the structural characteristics of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), conductive bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3), and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The synergistic effect of the components increases charge transport, exposure of the active sites, and electrochemical activity at the interfaces relative to ZIF-67. The composite showed a high specific capacity of 1721.37C g-1 when it was tested at 2 A g-1. The fabricated hybrid supercapacitor shows superior cycling stability, with 92% capacity retained after 5000 cycles, specific capacity of 269.82C g-1 and energy density of 65 Wh kg-1, and a power density of 3200 W/kg. Besides, the material exhibits good specific electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity at a low overpotential of 41 mV and high stability under 48 h of operating time and 5000 repeated HER cycles in an alkaline medium. The results showed that the ZIF-67/Bi2S3/g-C3N4 heterostructure is a promising multifunctional material for integrated energy storage and hydrogen production applications.
